Bentonite for Bored Piles: Evaluating Slurry Before Concrete Placement

으로 hermano-newmaterials October 11th, 2026 1 조회수
Bentonite slurry is used in some bored-pile construction methods to support excavations. Its suitability depends on the ground, groundwater, construction sequence and project specification.

For procurement teams, selecting the powder is only the beginning. The slurry must also remain suitable as excavation introduces soil and other contaminants.

Distinguish Fresh Slurry from Used Slurry
Fresh slurry testing establishes a baseline for the selected bentonite and mixing procedure.

During excavation, the slurry’s density, viscosity and solids content can change. A satisfactory fresh-slurry result therefore does not establish that the fluid is ready for concrete placement.

FHWA’s drilled-shaft guidance discusses the control of slurry properties and suspended solids as part of successful construction. Its guidance provides a technical reference; the applicable project specification should determine acceptance limits.

Understand the Water Supply
Use representative mixing water when evaluating candidate grades.

Coastal groundwater or saline water requires particular attention. Conventional bentonite should not be assumed suitable merely because it performs well in fresh water. The project engineer should assess whether a different slurry system is needed.

Monitor the Construction Cycle
A practical quality plan distinguishes samples collected after mixing, during excavation, after cleaning and before concrete placement.

Record the sampling location, fluid temperature and test method. Consistent records make it easier to identify whether a change comes from the powder, water, ground or cleaning process.

Increasing bentonite dosage is not a substitute for managing accumulated excavated solids.

Connect Material Selection with Site Control
For projects across Africa, the Middle East, Russia and South America, evaluation should use the expected water and temperature conditions. Purchase documentation should identify the grade, batch, test methods and agreed sample results. Powder fineness and swelling data are useful supporting information, but they do not replace slurry evaluation.

HERMANO supplies construction-grade bentonite for sample assessment. Provide your piling method, water conditions and project requirements to discuss an appropriate evaluation.
